MARY ELIZABETH ANTHONY (nee TAYLOR) After a brief illness, with her typical forthrightness in decision-making and dignity, Mary Anthony died on September 2, 2003 at the age of 89 years at Misericordia Place Personal Care Home. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Ron (Wendy), Iain (Deborah) and daughter Ruth (Don) Wright; her grandchildren, Cameron, Troy, David, Monica, Dillon and Jesse and her nephew John Taylor and Dons children, Brad, Carolyn, Julie and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter Gibson Taylor and Douglas Mae Williams; her husband Ronald Charles Anthony and her brothers, William (Bill) and John (Jack) Taylor. Mary was born in Walkerville, ON (now Windsor) on January 18, 1914. Her paternal grandfather John left Orkney in 1844 and spent six weeks on a sailing ship to come to Canada. Her maternal grandfather James Miller Williams was the first person to drill for oil in North America and was a founder of the Canadian Oil industry. Mary had a lifelong interest in Canadian history; she was an active participant and Honorary Member of the Fort Garry Historical Society. As a young woman, with Mothercraft training, Mary loved taking care of newborn babies. Babies and young children always held a special place in her heart. Mary enjoyed being an at-home Mom as her children were growing up in Fort Garry. She was a Brown Owl and Girl Guide Leader of the 4th Company and was very proud of "her girls". Mary learned to drive at 50, surprising her husband when she arrived home with her licence. She bought her first car thanks to Uncle Arts bequest. Her car represented her liberation from domestic serfdom and re-entry into the world outside the home; she gladly gave her "red rocket" to her grandsons when they learned to drive. Mary went to work at Registrars Department of The U of M following her husbands stroke. She loved greeting new students from around the world. She also treasured the stamps gleaned from their applications. Mary was an active member of St. Pauls Anglican Church while she lived on Riverwood Drive in Fort Garry. The family wish to thank the staff and friends of Misericordia Place who took special care of her, and her "Nook cafe" family. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 5 at the Misericordia Place Personal Care Home Chapel (44 Furby St.) at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations to: Misericordia Place Foundation, 99 Cornish Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1A2. LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements. 775-2220.
