KENNETH (KEN) GAUNT After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Dad passed away on September 1, 2003. Left to celebrate his life are Elsa, his loving wife of 42 years; sons, Rick (Karen), Ron (Tracy) and Chris; grandchildren, Matthew, Adam, Amanda and Aaron; sister-in-law Lou Ginter; special aunt and uncle, Pat and Bob McLeod; brother Ray; niece Valerie Cathro (Dave) dear friends Ken and Joyce Wankling, and of course his faithful companion Corky. Dad was a lifelong Winnipegger, and attended Daniel Mac and United College prior to embarking on a professional sales career. A skilled athlete, Dad played both Junior hockey and football, playing well enough to "have a cup of coffee" with Bud Grants Blue Bombers. He was later able to use his athletic talents to coach his young sons in hockey, as well as youngsters with the AA St. James Canadiens. Dad loved a party, and whether it was a neighbourhood barbecue, a New Years dinner party, or the Summer Wine and Cheese at the familys Caddy Lake cottage, everyone felt at home. Together with Mom, they were the consummate hosts, and their home and table were always welcoming. Dad was always happiest surrounded by his family - and whether it was on long family vacations with his young family, or in organizing treasure hunts at the cottage for his grandchildren, Dad loved to have everyone around. Like many men of his generation, Dad was often reserved in his comments, but he was intensely proud of his sons, and even more so of his beloved grandchildren. The family would like to extend its thanks to Dr. Rick Nason and staff at CancerCare, and a very special thanks to the Palliative Care staff at the Grace Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 8 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Dads memory to the Palliative Care Program through the Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7, or a charity of your choice. I held your hand tonight And prayed that you would find peace While I need you here to be my Grandpa I know that you are growing weary I understand. Tonight it was hard to let go, to say farewell I felt so safe as I held your hand But Ill always remember our time tonight, Grandpa, because I knew that you were with me Just one more time.
