Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGLADYS M. DEWAR (nee SMITH) May 24,1909 - September 3, 2003 Gladys passed away in Winnipeg at the Victoria General Hospital with her family at her side. She is survived by her son Malcolm (Catherine) of Winnipeg, daughter Moira (Douglas) Ormiston of Flin Flon; grandchildren, Shannon Kehler (Leslie), Patrick Ormiston, Susan Petalik (Kelly) and great-grandchildren, Scott and Ryan Kehler and Jessica Petalik. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Mary Smith who had come from Scotland in 1907; brothers, William, Gordon, and Clifford; and her beloved husband Gordon. Gladys grew up in the Emerson district and after graduating from normal school, taught at several schools prior to Graysville, MB. There she met Gordon, and after they were married, she switched careers to help him in their general store and raise their children. In 1945 they moved to Winnipeg where they remained in the grocery business and began an enduring commitment to St. Vital United Church. After the children reached high school Gladys resumed teaching. Her years at Varennes School established lifelong friendships with both students and staff, especially Anne Thoroughgood and her family. The loyalty of her kindred spirit, Dorothy Naish, especially during the last few years, will always be appreciated as will the friendship of Jean Murray. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Gladyss memory to St. Marys Road United Church or a charity of your choice. A celebration of Gladyss life will be held on Sunday, September 7, at 3:00 p.m. in St. Marys Road United Church, 613 St. Marys Rd. A reception will follow.
