STEPHEN NICHOLAS MONCHAK December 19, 1922 - September 4, 2003 It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Steve Monchak on September 4, 2003. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 50 years, Donna (nee Ducharme), daughters, Christine (Tom), Jacqueline (Derwyn) and his pride and joy his grandsons, Jason and Ryan. He is also survived by his brothers, William (Margaret) and Harry; and his sister-in-law Anne. Steve was predeceased by his parents, Horatio and Mary; brother John; and sister Anne Potasnyk. Steve was born and raised in Winnipeg attending King Edward and Isaac Newton schools. In 1943, Steve enlisted in the Navy and became a member of the band where he honed his skills with the clarinet and violin. Music would always remain an important aspect of his life. After his discharge from the Navy in 1945, Steve went on to become a tailor which led to his employment with Eatons where he met his wife Donna. Steve remained with Eatons his whole career, receiving his 25 year service ring in 1973 and retiring in 1979. During his years at Eatons, Steve was known for his attention to detail. He enjoyed his trade so much that "his girls" didnt know what "store bought" clothes were until they started school and Christmas wasnt really Christmas unless you received a stuffed animal made by "Uncle Steve". "His girls" meant the world to him. Never wanting to miss an evening with them, he even walked home through a snow storm that crippled most of the city just to be with "his girls". There were many a Sunday that the family could be found walking through the Zoo and taking a mini train ride. While working at Eatons, Steve enjoyed bowling with the Eatons Bowling League. It was here that Mom and Dad started their friendly competition in bowling and no matter what accomplishments Mom went on to achieve, Dads trophy was always the biggest and the best. He also enjoyed fishing. The summers out at White Lake and the fishing trips to Windigo as a member of the Arlington Sports Club were some of his most memorable. A longtime member of the No. 141 Royal Canadian Legion, Steve proudly received his 50 year membership pin and medal in 2000. Throughout his retirement, Steve still enjoyed sewing and his fishing trips until he was uncomfortable leaving the house. We wish to thank Dr. Burke and his staff for his years of service and dedication. Cremation has taken place and no service will be held as per Steves request. Flowers are gratefully declined, if so desired, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. WE LOVE YOU AND WILL MISS YOU PAPPA KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
