JOAO FERREIRA ALHO It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear husband and father this past Tuesday, September 16, 2003. Following a long battle with heart disease, he died peacefully in his sleep at home. He was a loving and dedicated father and husband who took great pride in his family. A sensitive, well natured man with a healthy sense of humour and an appreciation for a good story, he was passionate about life and enjoyed the company of others. He loved nature and the open space of the outdoors. He was a man who read extensively and liked to know what was going on in the world around him. He enjoyed woodworking, especially making toys for the joy of his life, his three young grandchildren. The seventh of ten children, he was born February 1, 1929, in Moitas Venda (Alcanena) Portugal. After apprenticing as a carpenter, he immigrated to Brazil where he lived for nine years. In 1961 he left the Brazil of his youth and immigrated to Canada, living initially in southern Ontario. On a visit home to Portugal in 1968 he met and married Maria de Jesus Goncalves. Together, they settled in Winnipeg where he practiced his trade and they raised three children, John, Gil and Karen. He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, his two sons and daughter, two daughters-in-law, (Elizabeth and Elsa), three grandchildren, (John, Joshua and Jacob), three sisters and two brothers, beloved nieces and nephews and many friends. A prayer service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 19 at Immaculate Conception Parish, 181 Austin St. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 20 also at Immaculate Conception Parish. Rite of committal will take place beside his parents in Portugal. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or the Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7.
