DONALD HOLDNICK July 6, 1917 - September 4, 2003 It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our father and grandfather Donald on Thursday, September 4, 2003 at the age of 86. Don was predeceased by his wife Helen; sister Jean; brothers, Albert and Bill. He leaves children, Gary, Dennis (Sandra) and Lenny to mourn his passing. His grandsons, Shawn (Cyndee), Jay, Wes, Ash and great-grandson Cole; also one surviving sister Stella Riediger. Dad spent his younger days in Kenora, ON working with his brothers and sisters helping to look after their parents cabins at Hilly Lake. It is here where Mom and Dad built their first house, a small log cabin. After leaving Kenora, Dad took a position at the C.N.R. in Transcona as a spray painter until his retirement. Mom and Dad lived in North Transcona on a small 15 acre farm where they raised their children. Dad spent his leisure time gardening or maintaining the immaculate grounds with Mom. Dad could also be found working in the garage on his collection of cars. Mom and Dad developed a passion for cooking large Ukrainian dinners for their family on a regular basis. Many great times were had and memories borne during those treasured Sunday dinners. Dad had a special place in his heart for many pets, especially his dogs which he took great pride in training. Mom and Dad both cared deeply for wildlife which included deer, geese, ducks and many types of birds. Their yard often resembled a small wildlife sanctuary. Dad had a very unique personality expressed mainly through his distinctive sense of humour. He was always willing to lend a helping hand especially for his grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered and missed by all. The family would like to thank the staff at Concordia Place over the past several years. Dad enjoyed teasing and joking with the staff which we are sure they are going to miss! A private service and burial to follow at a later date.
