MELVILLE "MEL" HENRY HUGHES Peacefully, on Wednesday, September 17, 2003, Mel passed away at home with his wife and family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Eileen of 61 years of marriage and their children, Pam Turner (Gary), Laurie Anne Pacifico (Angelo), David, Mari Bonner (Hugh), Jeff and Alana. Also mourning his loss are his grandchildren, Russell Wood (Naomi), Allison Henderson (Nick), Sheri Ramnarace (Kesh), Rick Turner, Ben and Alex Bonner, Cameron, Whitney and Dawson Hughes, Carson Hughes; eight great-grandchildren and his cousins, Alice Priestly and Larry Barnaby. Mel, son of Gilbert and Matilda Hughes, was born in Virden, MB. He grew up in Winnipeg, where he met and married his wife, Eileen. Mel joined the Air Force in 1939, spending the war years in Quebec. He was an employee of Westeel until his retirement in 1981. He was a private man who enjoyed reading, movies, dancing and spending time with his family. Mel valued his long standing friendships that provided him with stimulation through conversation, debate and humour. He was a true gentleman whose tolerance and loyalty were his strongest virtues. We will miss him dearly. In compliance with Mels wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal funeral service will be held. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, October 24 between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. at the Wildewood Club, 761 North Dr. Our family would like to acknowledge the friends who have been so supportive over the past several months. We wish to extend our thanks to the Palliative Care team at Riverview and in the community. Special thanks to Janice, Jules, Alex and Bremen whose sensitivity, care and respect for Mel and our family was exemplary. Thanks also to Drs. D. Young, Jason and Garcia. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mels memory may be made to the WRHA Palliative Care Program, A8024 - 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6.
