ALEXANDER (ALEX) PETERS It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of our father, brother, and uncle, Alex Peters, on September 20, 2003, at the Seven Oaks General Hospital. He was 77 years old at the time of his death. Left to mourn are his daughters, Joanne Peters (Michael Dudar), and Allison Peters; his brother Steve Petrie; his sisters, Catherine Peterson and Joan Devine; his sister-in-law Phyllis Drozd; his brother-in-law Sam Smilski (Guyla) his niece Nancy Korn; his nephews, Reese (Daria) and Robert Smilski (Sandra) and great-nephews, Jacquie and Michael Korn, Gregory, Caden, Danielle, and Melanie Smilski. He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Haska Petrashok; his brothers, Oscar, Michael, and Joseph; his sisters, Mary and Elsie, and recently, his dear brother-in-law Mike Drozd. On August 23, 2002, he celebrated 50 years of marriage and is now reunited with his beloved wife, Elsie, who died on September 21, 2002. Alex was born and raised in North Winnipeg, where he attended King Edward and Isaac Newton Schools, completing his education at St. Johns Technical High School. During the Second World War, he served with Canadas Merchant Navy, serving on the SS Rocky Mountain Park. Following the war, he worked with the Department of Transport and at Massey Harris. He began work with the Canadian National Railway in 1952, retiring in 1989. In his retirement, Alex enjoyed his weekly swims and bowling meets, played his harmonica, worked in his garden, and treasured his time with Elsie. He was a long-time parishioner at St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church, a member of Branch 141 Royal Canadian Legion, and recently, the Lions Club. He was especially proud of his membership with the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association, of his participation in their Colour Party, and the work undertaken to recognize their invaluable contribution to Canadas war-time effort. Alex was a kind-hearted and charitable man, and his family and friends will miss him deeply. The family would like to express its thanks to the staff at the Seven Oaks General Hospital for their dedicated, professional, and compassionate care, and to the neighbours, family, and friends who showed Alex such kindness and caring during his short illness. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 24 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave., with a Redemptorist Father officiating. A private family interment will follow at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Alexs memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
