MARY CHERNEY On September 22, 2003 at Seven Oaks Hospital, Mary Cherney, beloved Mother, Baba, Sister, passed away at the age of 81 years. She is survived by daughter Cathy; sons, John (Patti), Alan (Wendy) of Saskatoon, and Stephen (Lisa) grandchildren, Laura, Nicholas, Colin, Scott and Michael. She also leaves to mourn her passing her sisters, Annie Wawrykow and Nettie Furgale and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Nick (1983) father Peter Sayk (1928) stepfather Stephan Chokan (1966), mother Katherine Sayk Chokan (1978). Mom was born March 14, 1922 in Winnipeg. After graduating from the Angus School of Commerce, she worked in the family business, Chokans Grocery. She married our Dad in 1947. As we grew up, we enjoyed many special occasions playing at our Baba Ostrowskis farm in Birds Hill and raiding the candy counter at Baba Chokans store. Mom loved animals, especially her pets Brutus, Cindy and Ashes. She was a member of the Winnipeg Humane Society and the West Kildonan Horticulture Club. Mom was a member of both the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Churches. She enjoyed attending many events at the Inkster Seniors Club and St. Nicholas Seniors Club. Mom enjoyed talking and visiting with her many friends in her neighbourhood. Her garden was a source of great pride with its multitude of flowers, vegetables and fruit trees, which blossomed into many awards from the Horticulture Club. She loved cooking, especially preparing traditional Ukrainian dishes for her family. Going to her house was a treat for her grandchildren who got to spend late nights searching through her many "treasures". We would like to thank her friends and neighbours who have helped out the past few years, especially Pauline, Bill, Sadie and Sue. Prayers will be held on Thursday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, September 26 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. with a Basilian Father officiating. Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Marys memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, or to a charity of your choice. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
