JULIA MARIE PENNEY (nee FUDYMA) Mom was born in Winnipeg on July 21, 1916 and passed away peacefully on September 21, 2003, at the River East Personal Care Home, at the age of 87. Julia was the oldest of three girls born to John and Anna Fudyma. As a young girl, Julia grew up at 813 College Ave. Activities she enjoyed were playing baseball and singing in Sokols choir. Mom graduated from St. Johns High School and later from Dominion Business College, with diplomas in Secretarial Studies and Stenography. Mom was married in 1942 when, on New Years Eve, she eloped with her sweetheart Tom Penney. In the early years of their marriage they resided in the towns of St. Thomas and Dauphin, later moving to Vancouver, where Tom was stationed with the Air Force. Upon expecting their first child, Julia and Tom moved back to Winnipeg. They made their home and raised their family in Winnipeg. Mom was an ardent gardener and devoted her life to her family. We have been honoured that God gave us this woman as our mother, our grandmother, our mother-in-law, our aunt and our friend. The proud children and in-laws of Julia are Carole Kuryk of Winnipeg and her husband Don, Maureen Sawchuk of Prince Albert, SK and her husband Morris, Randy Penney of Edmonton, AB and his wife Barbara, and Kathleen Hazen Beaton of Richmond, BC and her husband Doug. The proud grandchildren are Jackie and Kellyann Kuryk, Thom and Theran Sawchuk, and Clinton and Scott Hazen. Julia was predeceased by her husband Tom Penney (1969) her grandson Andrew Kuryk (1994) and her two sisters, Rose and Helen. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at River East Personal Care Home. The caring, compassion and respect shown to our mother and grandmother eased the journey during her last few years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to River East Personal Care Home, or the charity of their choice. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church, 264 Donwood Ave., at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, with visitation one half hour prior to the service. Interment services will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main St. We invite friends and family to join us for a reception at Glen Eden from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN EDEN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND RECEPTION CENTRE 338-7111
