FRANCES GILLIES It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Aunt Fran. Frances Gillies was born in Winnipegosis on January 27, 1919. Frances grew up in Fort Rouge graduating from the St. Boniface School of Nursing. She was a Winnipeg girl with the exception of her years overseas (1946 to 1947) with the US Army as a nurse. Frances returned from her duties and began a long career at the Winnipeg Clinic. She devoted herself to her nursing and the clinic. Many were touched through the years with her compassion, for it was compassion and duty that were the cornerstones of Frances life, whether it was compassion through her caring skills as a nurse or the love she shared with her many friends and family. Frances also was devoted to many duties that she performed through her church, First Lutheran and responsibilities that she took on in all areas of her life. Throughout the many years of retirement since leaving the clinic, Frances enjoyed travelling and visiting her many friends in Canada and America. Always a proud Icelander, Frances was able to visit Iceland and had enjoyed a memorable trip to Europe years earlier with her family. Frances had visited her brother Alexanders family in Denver, Colorado frequently, and had many friends in her adopted American home. Frances was predeceased by her father, Gudmundur (Stoney) in 1948; her mother, Sara (1973) brothers, Alexander (1999) and Rolland (1970). She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Gillies of Winnipeg and Aleida Gillies of Denver; nieces and nephews, Joy and Gavin Wood, Karen and Mel Lanthier, Rolland and Linda Gillies and family, Lee and Gary Lacoste and family (of Manitoba), Sue and Bill Klimko and family, Sandy and Mary Gillies and family, and Christine and Joe Gootee and family (of USA). The number of extended family and friends is far too long to list here. Suffice it to say there are many hearts, both the old and young, that will carry the memory of our dear Aunt Fran. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers of Deer Lodge Hospital, Lions Manor and most recently, Riverview Health Centre. A special thanks to those of Wing 3W at Riverview who were with Frances in her final days. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 26 at First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St., with Pastor Michael Kurtz officiating. A family interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St., Winnipeg, MB R3G 1R2 or to Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4 would be gratefully appreciated.
