Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEMIL GUDMUNDUR KERNESTED No words can express our deep sorrow in advising of the passing of Emil Kernested, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend at Health Sciences Centre on September 23, 2003. He was deeply loved, cherished and respected by his wife Margaret; children, Kristjan and Candace and son-in-law Robert Glanville. The void he leaves behind will never be filled. He was our strength and our comfort. Emil was born in Gimli, MB on August 17, 1943 to Kristjan Vilhelm Kernested and Sigridur Nattfridur Jonasina (nee Hanson). He was raised at Kjarna, the family farm in Husavik, MB. He married Margaret (nee Thorlakson) on October 1, 1966. Emil and Margaret were blessed with two wonderful children, Kristjan in 1967 and Candace in 1971. Emils wife and children were his pride and joy, as he was theirs. Emil, along with his wife and children enjoyed weekends and holidays at Kjarna until the passing of his mother in 1991. For the past few years, Emil spent his free time with his family at the lakeside cottage in the Interlake, which he and Margaret worked together to complete, and which was to be their retirement home. Emil completed his high school education in Gimli then moved to Winnipeg in 1965 where he was employed by Parkhill Bedding and Furniture. He left Parkhill in 1968 to work for Kmart Canada Ltd. He was with Kmart for 30 years until the closing of the last Winnipeg store in 1998. Emil then returned to school and obtained a certificate as an Aerospace Manufacturing Technician from Red River College, maintaining a grade point average of 4.5 throughout the course. He then obtained his Industrial Maintenance Technician certificate and Advanced Welding certificate from the Winnipeg Technical College, again with excellent standing. At the time of his passing, Emil was employed with Westland Steel Products Ltd. in Winnipeg in a job he greatly enjoyed. Emil was predeceased by his parents, mother-in-law Johanna Thorlakson, who thought of him as a son; brother Ingimar; sister Christine; sister-in-law Norma Kernested and cousin Gordon Kernested. Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn two brothers, Kristjan (Bill) of Cloverdale, BC and David of Selkirk; three sisters, Violet (Bill) Mann of Winnipeg, Lilja (Grant) MacAuley of Morris and Margaret (Fred) Pidruchny of Gimli; three sister-in-laws, Marlene (Bruce) Forbes of Oak Bluff, Christine (Victor) Dann of Husavik and Hazel Williams of Winnipeg, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27 at the Gimli Lutheran Church, Gimli, MB. Interment will follow at the Husavik Cemetery, Husavik, MB. At the familys request, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Emil, as expressed by your son-in-law, "In a world where truly good men are few, it was an honour to have known you." The following is a poem that Margaret wrote and gave to Emil years ago. Its message has only deepened as the years passed. If I should lose you I would die. I know; everyone would say that no one can die of a broken heart but I would surely die. The me that I am, the me that lives and loves, gives and takes, laughs and cries, that me would die. The body of me, the me that others see, the shell of me would still be here. Empty and bare. For the heart of me and the soul of me would be gone and there would never again be the me that I am with your love. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements.
