AUDREY VIOLA (Vi) APPLEYARD (nee MEADS) 1921-2003 Peacefully on Thursday, September 25, 2003, Vi Appleyard, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 81 after a lengthy illness. Vi is survived by her beloved and devoted husband Ken; her daughter Audrey; son Ken, wife Judy, children Steven and Shauna (Trevor) son Stan, wife Debbie, daughter Jenna; son George, wife Vera, children Matthew, Amber and Mackenzie; and son Jeff, wife Cheryl, children Matt, Mike, Timmy and Ashley; sisters, Nell Smith and Winnifred (Joe) Doak; and brothers, Albert (Irene) and Frank (Mable) and sister-in-law Emma Meads; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Arthur and John; sister Mary Walker; and brothers-in-law Harold K. Hutson, Jim Walker and Jim Smith. Vi was born in Calverton, Nottinghamshire, England on December 1, 1921 to Arthur and Maria Meads. The family immigrated to Canada in 1926 and settled in the Tecumseh area where she attended Tecumseh School. She moved to Winnipeg and worked at Harmans Drugs during the Second World War. Vi married Ken on May 19, 1945 at Grassmere Church and they farmed and raised their family in the Stonewall District. Vi was devoted wife and Mother with a love of baking, sewing and gardening. She served her community as a member of the Grassmere UCW for many years. In later years she enjoyed the special trips they took with friends and taking in many fiddle events with her husband. Pallbearers will be her five children and grandson Matthew. We would like all family and friends to please consider themselves as honorary pallbearers. The family thanks the staff of Stonewall Hospital for their kind and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society or the charity of choice. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 29, at the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall with interment at the Grassmere United Church Cemetery.
