JOHN SMALL 1913 - 2003 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, John Small. He is survived by daughters, Charlotte Mullen, Marlaine Small (Julio Vivanco) son Louis Small (Ofelia) and special daughter-in-law Jean Small. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by his parents, Nicolas and Rose Tkaczuk; 11 siblings; his wife Alice Campeau; son-in-law John Mullen; grandson Ken Mullen; and infant granddaughter Ramona Mullen. John was born in Erickson, MB and attended school until grade five. He then went off to work in and around the Erickson area for various farmers. He made his way to Dacotah Siding Manitoba where he met and married Alice who worked at a neighbours farm. He was a blacksmith and owned his own shop in Starbuck, MB until volunteering to serve overseas during the Second World War. His motto was "I can fix everything except a broken heart". Upon returning from overseas, he again opened a blacksmith shop in Starbuck. With the implementation of new technology for farm equipment, he closed his shop and re-enlisted with the Armed Forces where he attained the rank of Sergeant. After 25 years of service with the Armed Forces and another nine years as a Civil Servant, he retired to Winnipeg. During his retirement, he travelled to South America and Asia and made many new friends. Upon the death of his wife, he moved back to Erickson and was happy to be back home. After renovating his house, he enjoyed tinkering in his shop, building bird houses, cabinets and fixing all that needed repair for friends and neighbours. In 1994, John was hit by a massive stroke which left him paralysed on his left side. In October 1997, he came to live with his daughter Charlotte who cared for him until 1999 when she was no longer able to give him the care he needed. His remaining years were spent in Misericordia Place where he met new friends and was well cared for. The family wishes to thank the staff on Rose Walk Way at the Mis. for their care and compassion of our dear Dad/Grandfather. He will be missed greatly by everyone who knew him and his devillish grin and sparkling blue eyes. We love you Dad (Pops). Funeral service was held on Friday, October 3 at Misericordia Place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Johns memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or to Misericordia Place, 44 Furby St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2A1.
