JANET P. CANTLON (nee THOMSON) Janet Cantlon passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at her home in Killarney, MB. Janet will be missed by her husband of 54 years. She leaves to mourn her children, Ted (Elaine), Bill (Donna), Flora (Marlon Tripp) and Tony; her grandchildren, Craig, Derek, Justin, Evan, Thomas, Cassie, Lauren and Dylan; her sisters, Barb Cantlon and Liz Dickson (Brad) and her brothers, Moir (Carol) and George (Myrna) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Her parents Bill and Flora Thomson; and her brothers, Donald and Duncan predeceased her. Janet was born on the family farm "Interlochen" (between two lakes) in Pleasant Valley, MB on January 27th. She obtained her teachers certificate in 1947 at the Mylor School District where she taught until she married Lynn and they moved to Cartwright, MB to begin farming. Lynn later joined the military and Janet became a "Military Wife." A military wife has the distinction of many moves, many friends, many talents and many opportunities to "begin again." This wife with all her duties has the added distinction of having to be resourceful, (yet another way to tell your kids that they are again moving and will indeed make new friends), versatile (as she has to adapt to new situations and places quickly and often with a resilience only other military wives can relate to), independent (as a military husband is often away for extended periods), and a diplomat (as she has to learn to entertain and mingle with a variety of personalities in a multitude of situations and be respectful of all ranks at all times). This wife has to do all of this with ingenuity at the same time maintaining her own beliefs, self-worth, style and individual characteristics...no easy task. Janet with her own flair was one of several definitions of a "Military Wife". Lynn and Janet finally set down roots in Winnipeg where Janet held a variety of "careers" as she loved to learn and was not fearful of change. She was a Real Estate Agent for Patrick Realty, filed personal income tax claims for H&R Block and for the last ten years she loved working for Carlton Cards with a group of ladies she considered her best of friends. She had a great love of curling. And took part in the game in a variety of ways, coaching, judging, playing ladies and mixed and eventually skipping. Janet skipped for many years at various rinks across the country and Winnipeg even travelling to Germany twice to spiel. Her artistic talents were evident in her flower gardens, crafts and in particular her paintings. She was a member of the St. James Art Club for a number of years. Her daughter and sons all proudly display a "Moms" painting (or more) in their homes. Janets true pride and joy was her grandchildren and she was interested in their endeavours, from their sports and pastimes to their opinions and aspirations. Funeral service was held at the Wheatland Chapel, Killarney. Padre Lawrence Smith officiated. There was a private interment of Janets cremated remains at Neelin Cemetery, Neelin, MB at the family plot. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Janets name to a charity of your choice. Rest in Peace Mom. Arrangements were in care of Paul Smith, Killarney Funeral Home.
