FERNANDO SILVEIRA BETTENCOURT With a heavy heart we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father on October 3, 2003 at home with his wife at his side. Dad was born June 24, 1922 in the village of Rosais, Sao Jorge, in the Azores/Portugal. He arrived in Winnipeg with his family December 15,1969 to start a new and better life which he so desired for his family. He leaves behind his wife of 47 years Maria Germana and children, John (Maria), Jose (Clara), Emanuel (Ana), Jacinta (Paul), Lucia (Trevor) of Washington State; ten grandchildren, Cynthia, Alyssa, Ashley, Nelson, Carmen, Matthew, Marla, Marcus, Lyra and David. A brother Franklin de Sousa as well as many nephews and nieces survive him. Dad farmed in Portugal and he loved the land. He loved music and was an accomplished trumpet player and singer. When he heard that Canada would accept him, he did not hesitate leaving his homeland with his family and together they made a better life in Canada. He worked as a cutter of leather garments for 20 years until retiring at the age of 67. He loved sports particularly watching his sons play soccer, Hockey Night in Canada and also enjoyed going to the cottage. After retiring he devoted much of time to help raise his grandchildren and took great joy in seeing them grow up. In the last 2 years his health declined and he had several brushes with death, but he pulled through and enjoyed life fully to his last days. He spoke many times of the great care he received at HSC where he was treated in Emergency, Intensive care units and on several wards. We would like to thank the staff at HSC and Dr. L. DaSilva for the kind and thorough care he provided to our Dad especially in the last few years. Flowers are gratefully declined and if desired a donation can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Prayers will be held at Blessed John XXIII parish, 3390 Portage Avenue (at Cavalier), on Sunday October 5 at 7:00 pm. Funeral mass will be on Monday October 6, at 11:00 am at Blessed John XXIII Parish with Monsieur Maurice Comeault officiating. Committal in Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Assumption Cemetery.
