Bob was 16 when the Great Depression began. He was forced to "ride the rails" in search of work. One of his best jobs was helping to build the Clear Lake Lodge when he was 17. He married Hazel Penwarden on August 3, 1940. For the first years of their marriage they farmed in the Cloverdale and Selkirk area, where Gayle and George were both born. After leaving the farm they moved to Selkirk where Bob worked at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre as a Second Class Engineer. After six years he transferred to Headingley Gaol, where he was the Chief Engineer. Soon after he moved his family to Winnipeg. Bob was an avid fisherman and hunter. Every weekend was spent camping with his family and friends. Bob made his last moose hunting trip when he was 79, with his friends, Davy, Henry, Hughie and Bud. After his retirement in 1970, Bob and Hazel enjoyed many winter vacations. They especially enjoyed their adventures in Puerto Vallarta. A service of remembrance will be held on Wednesday, October 15 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, with Pastor Stan Richards officiating.
