MARY AIKIN EVANS Peacefully at West Park Manor on Thursday, October 9, Mary Evans passed away at the age of 98 years. Mary was born in Virden to Isabella and William Reid of Hargrave, Manitoba. She was raised and educated in Hargrave and Virden. In 1928 she received her RN from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing. Mary nursed in Winnipeg until September 1930 when she chose to travel by train, steamer and paddlewheel boat to Mayo Landing, Yukon to marry the resident physician, her fiance, Dr. Harold S. Evans. Two years later Harold and Mary moved from Mayo Landing to live in Edinburgh, Scotland, Timmins, Ontario, Winnipeg, and then, Brandon where they settled for 49 years. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Mary involved herself in the life of the community by volunteering for the Brandon General Hospital Womens Auxiliary, Brandon College Womens Auxiliary and various church and charitable organizations. In 1987 Harold and Mary moved to Winnipeg and resided at Marina Del Rey. Mary was predeceased by her dear Harold in 1992, and by her siblings, William, David, and Helen. She is survived by her sons, William (Nadia) and Brian of Winnipeg; her grandchildren, Shauna (Tim Friesen) and David of Winnipeg, Brian of Kelowna, and Brock of Vancouver; her step-brother William G. Reid of Victoria; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staffs of West Park Manor, the Misericordia Hospital, the Victoria Hospital and Home Care as well as special friends who shared their kindness and supported Mary on her journey. A memorial service, reception following, will be held at Garry Memorial Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. on Wednesday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Gary Clark officiating.
