GWENDOLINE JESSIE SMITH Peacefully on October 13, 2003 at Golden West Centennial Lodge, Gwendoline Jessie Smith (nee Carter) passed away at the age of 92. She was predeceased by her husband Charlie Smith in 1995. Gwen was born at home in Winnipeg on May 17, 1911. Gwen and Charlie were married in Flin Flon on December 25, 1935 where their two children were born. They moved back to Winnipeg in 1939. After achieving her goal of becoming a teacher at a very young age, she taught in Manitoba until her marriage to Charlie. Gwen returned to teaching after raising her children and continued to teach until her retirement at 59. Her family was her first priority to whom she always gave her unconditional love and support. Gwen, who was an accomplished pianist, entertained family and friends on many occasions. Left to cherish her loving memory are her daughter Sandra Carriere; son George (Marlene) Smith; grandchildren, Corrine (Reg) Macklin, George (Dawn) Carriere, Bruce (Cathy) Carriere, Jacquie (Evan) Hancox, Tobin (Sandi) Smith, Tyrel (Lois) Smith, Troy Smith; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; niece Irene Graham and family; and niece Gracie (Irving) Young and family; nephew Frank (Muriel) Moreau. A celebration of Gwens life will be held on Thursday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Because of her love of cats, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3.
