WILLIAM (BILL) SKLANKA With sadness, we announce the death of Bill on Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at the Seven Oaks General Hospital, at the age of 77 years. He leaves to mourn his daughter Karen Araujo; grandson Adam; and his numerous nieces and nephews of the Preachuk and Sklanka families. He was predeceased by his wife Maureen; sister Anne Preachuk and brother John Sklanka. Bill was born and spent his early years in Bienfait, Saskatchewan. His parents, Joseph and Rosalia, purchased the family farm in Parkdale, Manitoba, during the 1930s, where he lived until his marriage to Maureen (Somerville) in 1955. He continued to live in their family home in Weston after her death in 1990. Bill was proud of his 41 year employment with the railways. He started at age 16 as a clerk in the CNR Station and then continued this job on the CNR Lines throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. He became a Morse operator for the CPR and ended his career as a telecommunications operator for CN/CP. This was interrupted only by his brief service in the Canadian Army in Alberta near the end of the Second World War. A longtime member of Bel Acres Golf and Country Club, Bill was part of the Dawn Patrol with whom he shared not only early tee times but lasting friendships. He was an active participant with the North Centennial Seniors and the Royal Canadian Legion: Brooklands & Weston Branch. Bills funeral service was held on Friday, October 17 in the Chapel of Memories in Wojciks Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue at Sharp Blvd. Interment followed in Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Avenue. A heartfelt thank you to all the family and friends for their help in making the day special and for their overall love and support. If so desired, donations may be made in Bills memory to the PsycHealth Centre, PZ 439 - 771 Bannatyne Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.
