MARY G. BOOMER (nee FAWNS) Peacefully, with her loving family at her side, Mary Boomer passed away at the Grace Hospital, October 19, 2003. Mary is survived by her daughter Anne Walker; granddaughter Sarah Drew; sisters, Ethel Stewart, Joan Sutherland, Kathy Thompson (Don) sister-in-law Margaret Boomer; many nieces, nephews, extended family Jeff and wife Kim Walker of Regina. Mary was predeceased by her husband Andrew; infant son Drew; parents, William and Ethel Fawns; sisters, Anne Fawns, Gladys Partridge, Ruth MacKay. Mary was born in Winnipeg on August 19, 1923 - she spent most of her life in the west end of Winnipeg. She married her childhood sweetheart Andy in July, 1945. She commenced work at Winnipeg General Hospital in early 1941 and left in 1951 to raise her family returning in the lab of Health Sciences Centre in 1971. She retired in 1989 and quickly became involved with Health Sciences Centre retirees. Church was a very important part of Marys life. As a young woman at St. Pauls United she was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent of CGIT. This became the beginning of many years of dedicated service to CGIT, becoming the executive secretary of Winnipeg CGIT Board. Many words shared at mother and daughter banquets, as a guest speaker will always be remembered. She participated for years at Christmas vesper services, leadership training for groups in the city and recruited and hired staff for Camp Brereton. As a tribute she was honoured as a lifetime member of CGIT. She served as chairperson of church council at St. Pauls at the time of the sale of the church to Health Sciences Centre. She also was instrumental in the amalgamation with St. Matthews Anglican Church and the creating of St. Matthews - Maryland Community Ministry. At the closing of Maryland United, Mary moved with many friends to Silver Heights United Church. She was a "life" member of U.C.W. She enjoyed her friends, poker with the "gals" and travelling - never did make it to Churchill. Mary spent the last four years residing at Golden West Centennial Lodge, graciously and with dignity struggled with Alzheimers Disease. Thank you to the staff for their compassionate care. Thanks also to the staff of Grace General for their support and care in her final days. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 23 at 10:30 a.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, with Rev. Don Johnson and Rev. Doug Flint officiating. Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gordon Stenhouse, Ross MacKay, Bill and Grant Sutherland, Matthew Thompson, Scott Ellis. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6; CancerCare Manitoba, 109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9; or Golden West Centennial Lodge, 811 School Rd., Winnipeg, MB, would be an appreciated tribute to Marys generous and giving nature.
