MICHAEL MERVYN CASSIRAM March 28, 1936 - October 19. 2003 With great sadness we announce the passing of Michael Mervyn Cassiram, October 19, 2003 at age 67 in Riverview, after a courageous battle with cancer. He passed peacefully, his partner and his youngest daughter Kim by his side. Left to mourn his passing are his partner and loving companion Valdine Scott-Huyghebaert and her daughter Tanya. Mike and Valdine spent so many happy years together and his loss is immeasurable. His memory, generosity of love, smile, wit, positive attitude, and tenderness will be forever cherished. Mike was born in San Fernando, Trinidad March 28, 1936 to Christiana and Laurie Cassiram. He is predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Daphne, Marjorie and Jocelyn. His brothers and sisters in Trinidad, Irwin (Marjorie), Melville (Carman), Laura, Margaret (Roy) Philbert, Lorna (Winston) Constable, Winston (Baby), and Keith (Sherril) will keep his memory close and alive in his birth land. Mike loved his children immensely; proud of the people they grew up to be. Left to mourn his passing are his children, Andre (Leslie) of Winnipeg, Angela and Kim (Bill) of Toronto, and their mother Barbara. Mike touched the lives of very special people and "Pappie" will be lovingly remembered by Terry, (Ray, Kaitlyn, Samantha, Trey), and Kimberly and Anthony and their families. Special thanks to Karen for her support. His memory will live on with the many relatives and friends in Canada and Trinidad. Mike talked fondly of his "boy days" in Trinidad sharing happy memories with family and friends. In 1956, at age 19 Mike moved to London, England and served 2 years as a snapper with the Royal Engineers. He then studied Instrument Engineering at North Hampton Polytechnic Institute receiving his degree in 1963. Moving to Canada in 1964 and settling in Winnipeg, he obtained a position with the City of Winnipeg Water Works and Waste Department. Mike rose from Operator to Superintendent and his work ethic and expertise twice earned him the William D. Hatfield Award for Outstanding Operator in Western Canada. After serving the City for 30 years he retired in 1994 to enjoy life with his calm, easy style. Mike was a man of unique personality; courageous, thoughtful, competent, and compassionate. He cherished the foundation of family and loved people, jazz, sports, golf, and birds. Mike always made it seem like "there was a way" when others were troubled. There is a way for you Mike "There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love" (Martin Luther King, Jr.) We love you. Have peace. Mike and his family extend sincere appreciation for the compassion of Concordia Oncology and 3 East Riverview staff during his struggle. In lieu of flowers donations to CancerCare in Mikes name would be appreciated. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 23 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Garry Memorial Funeral Home.
