Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySYBIL PHYLLIS PAYNE (nee CAITHNESS) Peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Mom left her suffering and pain behind and joined Dad in Heaven on Saturday, October 25, 2003. Mom had been a resident at Oakview Place since June 2002 after having suffered a stroke in November 2001. Mom was predeceased by her husband Wally, in January of 1999; by her parents, Alexander and Lillian Caithness; and by her sister Eileen King in 1961. She is survived by her children, Gordon (Heather), Beverly Kamminga, (George), Marilyn Preston, (Scott), Diane Johnson, (Ken), Alan (Marie) and Donald Strom who became a part of her family at the age of 12. She leaves to treasure her memory her grandchildren, Cathy (Darryl), James, Marnie, Gayle, Neil, Cam, Kaleigh, Ashleigh, Scott, Chris, Todd, and Julie. She welcomed with great joy the arrival of her five great-grandchildren, Elliot, Ashley, Grace, Justine and Sarah whos pictures covered the walls of her room. Mom is also survived by her brother Bill Caithness (Torchy) her sisters-in-law, Gwen Daniels, Win Wildeman, Irene McLaughlin; and her brother-in-law Bob Payne (Anne). She will be missed by her special friends, Paula Aulis, Betty Miller and Cathie Van dusen. Mom was the eldest child of Alexander and Lillian Caithness. She was born in Winnipeg and spent the early part of her life in the North End. She and Dad (Wally Payne) were married on September 19, 1942. Eventually he was able to convince her to move to St. James where she resided until her passing. Mom was a wonderful lady who devoted herself to her family and others. She always put others first. Her talents in cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, and crocheting will always be remembered by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Moms spiritual life began at Atlantic Avenue United Church. She often told us stories of her early Sunday School days and CGIT etc. there. She was a founding member of Silver Heights United Church and remained active in the church until her illness. She taught Sunday School, was an Explorer leader, a member of the U.C.W., an Elder and a member of the Session. She enjoyed knitting and baking for church events. Mom was also a member of Cursillo and made many friends through this spiritual group. Mom was a homemaker until 1966. At that time she started working at Zellers in Westwood. From there she went to Eatons in Polo Park and eventually moved to the drapery department in the downtown store. She was a proud "Eatonion." She retired in 1984 but continued to work part time for a number of years after that. Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling in their retirement and made several trips to Great Britain and Europe with her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Torchy. What stories they had to share with us when they returned! Mom also fulfilled a dream of hers by attending a "Gathering of the Clans" in Scotland. She made a trip to Europe with her longtime friend Paula Aulis, which was very special to her. The family would like to extend their sincere thank you to all the wonderful staff at Oakview and especially the staff on 1 East for the care that they have given Mom since she moved there. Thank you also for the caring and compassion that they showed the family during our last few days with Mom. To Grace Watson, Moms roommate and her daughter Shelagh, we express our gratitude for the gift you gave us allowing all to be with our mom day and night. Your thoughtfulness will always be remembered. Thank you to all of Moms friends who continued to visit her through her illness with special thanks to Cathie Van dusen. She was so thankful for your visits which kept her up with what was happening in the church and neighbourhood. She fondly remembered all the bargain hunting expeditions you went on together. A service of remembrance will take place at Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Ave., on Wednesday, October 29 at 11:00 a.m. Following the service a gathering of family and friends will take place in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 - 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L OK6 or the Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 2T4. Your life was love and labour Your love for your family true No length of time can dim the past of love and memories of you. God has His arms around you and we see your tender face as youre lifted into Heaven in His loving warm embrace. Arrangements in care of: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
