ANNE LENA HAAS It is with heartfelt sadness that the family announces the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at the Betel Home in Gimli, MB, on October 26, 2003, with family by her side. Anne Lena Schmidt was born October 8, 1913, in Berlo, MB, to Phillip and Elizabeth Schmidt. She married John Haas on January 23, 1934, at Camp Morton, MB. They moved to Gimli in 1938. Left to mourn her passing are her daughters, Margaret Stamp (Eldred) of Ponoka, AB, Cecelia Vann (Leslie) of Winnipeg, Eleanor MacIntosh (Leroy) of Edmonton, AB; and sons, Richard of Victoria, BC, and Ronald of Winnipeg (Louise) brother John Schmidt; sister Helen Franz (Joseph) sisters-in-law, Edna Haas and Gladys Haas. She will also be greatly missed by her 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by her father and mother Phillip and Elizabeth; her husband John in 1974; her sister Kate Zeleniski; her brothers, Rudolph and Adam Haas; and her great-grandson Jamie Morin. Anne was a well-known member of the Gimli community for over 65 years. She was a lifetime member of the Gimli Curling Club and was proud of her many trophies and her treasured 8 Ender and was very active in bowling. She took great pride in her garden. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking and baking. She knitted hundreds of Afghans for family and friends and for many years, almost every new bride in Gimli received a pair of pillowcases that she had embroidered as a shower gift. A kind and gentle lady that was greatly loved by her family and will be sadly missed. The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of the Betel Home for their kindness and wonderful care that they have given Mother during her stay at Betel. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church, Gimli, Father Art Seaman officiating. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the Gimli Community Cemetery.
