Date of Passing: Oct 26, 2003
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDAVID CARLYLE RIVERS 1931 - 2003 With deep sorrow the family announces the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and friend, David Carlyle Rivers on Sunday, October 26, 2003. Dave was a dedicated husband, proud father and an even prouder grandfather. He married his childhood sweetheart Shirley (nee Taylor) and for over 52 years they were not only husband and wife but also each others best friend. So fiercely proud of son Wayne and daughter-in-law Cheryl, Dad was a committed and dedicated grandfather to Amanda and Ashley, the apples of grandpas eye. Dad joined the Winnipeg Fire Department in 1957 and retired after 35 years of active and dedicated service. Dad attained the rank of Assistant Director of Training in 1988 and received the medal of merit from the fire department in 1992. Always the cook, the meals in the "hall" were never the same once he assumed administrative duties and teaching the new recruits. A member of the Community of Christ church, Dad was predeceased by his father Lewis in 1953, mother Mary in 1995 as well as brother John "Mike" Rivers in 1991. Survived by wife Shirley, son Wayne and his immediate family, Dave leaves brother Jim; sisters, Mary "Nancy" Cuthbert and Ann Routley (Bruce) numerous nieces, nephews and mother-in-law Audrey Taylor. Who was the man we called Dad? He was an uncomplicated man who was proud of his chosen profession, believed in simple family values and the commitment to duty and responsibility. He was a husband, father, grandfather, confidant, teammate and a friend. He was our Dad and we loved him and will miss him. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Firefighters Burn Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society in his memory. The family wishes to thank the palliative care unit at St. Boniface hospital. Their compassion and understanding is a testament to the goodness in man. A memorial service to celebrate Daves life will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, Wednesday, October 29 at 2:30 p.m. Firemans Prayer When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage; Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child before it is too late Or save an older person from the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout, And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out. I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me, To guard my every neighbor and to protect his property. And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life; Please bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife. God be with you - we love you Grampa David CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
