JACK F. BENDER September 11, 1922 - October 27, 2003 With his family at his side, Jack went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 27, 2003 after a courageous struggle with cancer. Jack was born September 11, 1922 in Winnipeg to Jack (Johnny) and Susanna Bender, who predeceased him. His brother, Harry, also predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan; sons, John (Audrey) and Jim (Karen) daughters, Judy Andrich (Tom) and Janice Peters (Jon) also 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Jack had a long career working in credit management and development. He retired from the Pembina Valley Development Corporation. During the war, he served in the RCAF No. 84 Group in England and Germany. Jack enjoyed competition of many sorts; whether it was pool, ping pong, tennis, bowling, golf (scored a hole-in-one!) or checkers, chess, cards and debating. He was also an avid jogger, canoeist, swimmer, sailor and reader. While in his mid-50s, he bicycled from Fargo, ND to Lincoln, NE and back. Then a year later, biked from Morden to Toronto. As a young man, he was known for his ability to do hand stands and even walking on his hands. Jack was a St. Johns High School graduate and later attained diplomas from Manitoba Credit Institute, Sir George William College (Montreal) and the Alexander Hamilton Institute (Winnipeg). Jack attended Baptist churches for many years taking an active part in teaching Sunday School in finance and in leadership. He was a member of Willow Lake Baptist Church. His volunteer work included working with the Gideons, helping out with Meals on Wheels, and serving as president of the Morden Friendship Centre for Seniors. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). A gathering of family and friends will follow in the reception centre. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Gideons or the Willow Lake Baptist Church Memorial Fund will be gratefully received.
