WILLIAM JOHN NICHOLSON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Bill John Nicholson on October 28, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife Joan, his mother Amy, son James, daughter Joelle (Ken) and grandson Keegan as well as nephews, nieces and numerous friends. He was predeceased by his father William in 1956 and his sister Carol in 1972. Bill was born in Winnipeg on April 15, 1931. He grew up in St. Vital graduating from Glenlawn Collegiate in 1949. He immediately began his career with CNR as a machinist and a diesel mechanic. During the course of his employment he decided to further his education and attended the University of Manitoba, graduating from the Faculty of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1965. In 1968 he transferred to Fisheries and Oceans as a Regional Engineer where he remained until he retired in 1986. Bill was always active in the community. He began to coach hockey as a teenager, and continued to coach in St. Vital and Southdale until 1980. He was a member of the executive at Sandy Hook community club during the 70s & 80s. He enjoyed bowling and was a member and Secretary of the golfers bowling league. Bill was a talented pianist and added his personal touch to everything that he played. He was an active member and past president of the St. Boniface/St. Vital Rotary Club. Anyone who knew Bill knew that he loved to golf. He belonged to the Wildwood Golf and Country Club until he retired. He then became a member of the Sandy Hook Golf Club where he marshalled for many years. His passion for the game extended beyond merely playing. He was an avid volunteer for the Manitoba Golf Association working at numerous tournaments including the Manitoba Open. Bills greatest love was his family. He was a dedicated husband to his wife of 50 years and best friend Joan. They enjoyed many vacations together after he retired and spent summers at their cottage in Sandy Hook. He was a wonderful father who provided constant examples of honesty, integrity and friendship. His unconditional love and support will live in our hearts forever. Bill will always be remembered for his great sense of humour, his kindness to others, and his love of life. The family would like to thank the staff in Victoria Hospitals Unit 3 for the care given to our husband and father during his final weeks. We would also like to thank our family and friends for their unwavering support during this difficult time. A celebration of Bills life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday November 3 at Neil Bardal Funeral Chapel, 984 Portage Avenue (Aubrey Street entrance). In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave. Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
