CHARLES LAWRENCE (CHARLIE) BARNES CHANGE IN TIME OF SERVICE Peacefully on November 3, 2003, Charlie passed away at Rosewood Lodge in Stonewall, MB. Charlie was born November 21, 1921 in Sandridge, MB. He worked on the farm with his family and attended Sandridge school. In 1940, Charlie joined the RCAF and learned the trade of aircraft mechanic. He served overseas in England, North Africa, and Italy until the end of the war. He returned home and found a job at Wesley Auto in Winnipeg as a mechanic. A short time later, he and a friend, Tony Dorge, started their own auto repair business on the corner of Ellice and Erin in Winnipeg. In 1948, Charlie married Lorraine Summers from the Meadow Lea area. A few years later, he and Lorraine decided to move to the country to raise their family. They bought the Sandridge General Store from George Fethers which also housed the post office, of which Charlie became post master. Charlie then built a repair shop on the site and serviced a wide area of farmers over the next 47 years. He also grew grain and hay to supplement his income. Charlie was a lifetime member of the Inwood Elks, former board member of the Teulon Hospital, Inwood Community Hall, and municipal councillor for Armstrong between the years 1991 to 1995. Charlie loved life and had a wonderful sense of humour. He was very fond of animals, especially dogs, enjoyed old-time dancing and was an avid bird watcher. He enjoyed his working life, but his true passions were hunting and fishing which he did as often as he could with many good friends. He was blessed with a truly healthy life up until a severe stroke debilitated him in his 78th year. He faced the challenges this brought with courage. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Gertrude Barnes and brother-in-law John Carman. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Lorraine and four children, Lois (Peter) Karish, Gwen (Serge) Sawrenko, Beverly Barnes, and Trevor (Brenda) Barnes. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Kurt (Kim), Kristie, Kory, Kimberley, Katherine, Kyle; one great-grandchild Karsen and only sister Margaret Carman; as well as numerous cousins. Funeral service will take place Saturday, November 8 at Inwood Community Hall, 1:00 p.m. Pastor Terry Throndson and Pastor Alf Sanders officiating, with lunch to immediately follow. A private family interment will take place later that day. Pallbearers will be Larry Torske, Herbie Dilk, Wilfred Maskow, Leonard Dziedzic, Roy Fox and Ernie Monkman. All Charlies friends, please consider themselves honorary pallbearers. The family would like to send special thank you to the nurses and staff of Rosewood Lodge for all their care and compassion shown for Charlie during his years there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of ones choice. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Teulon in care of arrangements.
