MARGARIDA CORDEIRO August 1, 1920 - November 3, 2003 Suddenly, but peacefully at the age of 83, our loving mother and grandmother passed away at the Grace Hospital, after a brief illness following surgery. Margarida will be lovingly remembered by everyone she touched over the years with her warm heart, wonderful laughter and sense of humour, and beautiful smile. She leaves to mourn her passing three daughters, Fatima Read (Eduardo) of Sao Miguel, Azores, Margarida Martins (Francisco) of Winnipeg, Esmeralda Tavares (Luis) of Winnipeg; eight grandchildren, Luis-Miguel, and Maria-Antonia of Sao Miguel, Azores, Ricky Martins (Tamara), Sonia Ferreira (Gary), Kathy Martins, John Paul Tavares (Bea), Elizabeth Ribeiro (Pedro), Michael Tavares; three great-grandchildren, Kyle and Taylor Ribeiro, Dominic Martins. She also leaves a brother in Ontario, numerous brothers and sister, nieces and nephews in Portugal, and many close friends that were very much like family to her. Margarida was born in Lisbon, Portugal and was the second oldest of 10 children. Her family moved to Sao Miguel, Azores at a very young age, where she lived most of her life. She married in 1939 to Jose Cordeiro, who passed away in 1970, but together with her family she immigrated to Canada in 1973 and has spent the last 30 years living in Winnipeg. She worked for many years at Rice Sport and for Perths. She had a wonderful zest for life and enjoyed being an active member of the Portuguese community, and was also very devoted to her faith in God. Margarida loved to share with her family and friends her many wonderful and always entertaining stories of her very full life. She also loved traveling across Canada and to the Azores to visit numerous family members over the years. She lived at her apartment block on Sargent Ave. for many years and loved every moment spent there, and took with her many fond and lasting memories. All of her friends there were like another family to Margarida. She also enjoyed very much every Wednesday going to the Lions Club for seniors activities. She began many wonderful friendships there and missed them all dearly during her time in the hospital. The family wishes to express a special thanks to all the nurses and health care aides on 4 East at the Grace Hospital for all their wonderful and compassionate care of Mama. Prayers will be said on Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 7 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peters Roman Catholic Church, 748 Keewatin St. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery.
