Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEARL DEXTER GROUT Surrounded by his loving family our father was embraced by our mother and they were joyously reunited on November 3, 2003. Born in Winnipeg in 1926, Earl had a happy childhood growing up in East Kildonan. Dads involvement with Sea Cadets inspired him to join the Merchant Navy during the Second World War where he served as a wireless operator, often under dangerous conditions. His extensive travels around the world provided adventures and challenges that he would reflect on all his life. He was proud of his service and remained a member of the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association and past member of the Army, Navy and Air Force Association. After the war he returned to Winnipeg and began his career as Business Manager for White Truck Sales/Freightliner-Mercedes. He remained there for over 35 years becoming a valued employee known for his dedication and commitment to his job. He was a member of the Manitoba Trucking Association Pioneers Club. Earl and Kathryn were married in 1957 and happily raised their family in the Westwood area, spending entire summers at his childhood cottage at Albert Beach. This was his favourite place to be as it provided him the opportunity to combine his love and respect for nature and animals and share them with his family. During their later years, Earl and Kathy enjoyed travelling to exotic places and exploring his roots in the Northern United States. Dad will be remembered for his mischievous sense of humour. Growing up, he was always the prankster and never stopped entertaining us with his storytelling. He was always able to recognize each persons individuality and made everyone feel special. Earl is survived by his children, Judi Grout (Greg Sylvestre), Jill McMahon (Kelly), Johanne Bergeron (Roger), John Grout (Susan Snyder) and grandchildren, Dylan and Rebecca Peterniak and Blake McMahon; also brother-in-law Robert McKellar. He was predeceased by his wife Kathryn on November 2, 2001; his parents, Vernon and Ollie; and sister Shirley McKnight. A memorial service was held on Friday, November 7 at 11:00 a.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 699 Broadway. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Manitoba Branch, 200-55 Donald St., R3C 1L8. We would like to thank everyone involved in our Dads care during his extended illness including homecare, dialysis units at St. Boniface and Seven Oaks Hospitals and the many dedicated doctors and nurses. Special thanks goes to Adele who became more than just Dads caregiver, but also his friend. Our Dad lived his life as an example for us all, never giving up hope, valuing life and showing incredible courage right until the end.
