ERNEST LLOYD COOKE 1911 - 2003 Peacefully, after a short illness, E. Lloyd Cooke passed away on November 3 at Riverview Hospital. His wife, Violet, predeceased him in 1990. He leaves to mourn his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roy and Jean Edwards of Kelowna, BC.; and cousins, Phyllis Metcalfe of Vancouver, BC, Marge Stabner of Prince Albert, SK, Rose Stabner of Moosehorn, MB and many nieces, nephews and friends. Lloyd will be fondly remembered by people who knew him, for his good humour, good heart and generosity to those in need. Born on May 25, 1911, an only child, Lloyd spent his early years in Steep Rock, MB, where his father worked at the cement plant. He attended Steep Rock School for eleven years, and finished his Grade 12 in Winnipeg at St. Johns College (North End). After Grade 12, he attended Manitoba Normal School where he earned his teaching certificate. He taught several years in one-room school houses in the country, where he met and married another teacher, Violet Edwards of Dauphin, MB, in 1944. Lloyd and Violet moved to teaching positions in Winnipeg. Lloyd taught business administration at Success Business College for several years. In his spare time, he studied accounting. After attaining a certificate in public accounting, he worked as an accountant for Sydney I. Robinson for a while, before returning to the teaching field as a business education teacher at Technical Vocational School, where he worked until his retirement. Lloyd had many interests. Geography, in particular, was a special pleasure for him. He spent many happy hours pouring over maps and reading National Geographic. Another interest was history, especially of early Manitoba and Canada. He combined his love of history and geography with a love of travel. When Violet was alive, he planned many trips for them, and after her death, blessed with good health, he continued to travel widely, including one trip to China at age 85. He also loved driving holidays, paying frequent visits to his relatives in western Canada, the last one at age 89. Lloyd was always much involved with his community. A major interest was in the Mason Lodge of Manitoba, particularly the Scottish Rite. He achieved 33 levels in the Lodge and enjoyed the companionship of his fellows. Lloyd and Violet were also strong church people. In their early years in Winnipeg they attended Harstone United Church. Later they became founding members of Oxford United Church, which Lloyd attended until its closing, and then became a member of Westworth United Church. Lloyd and Violet were loved by many, a reflection of their appreciation of the needs of others. Lloyd contributed generously to many organizations that were important to him. His life was a good one. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at CancerCare Manitoba and Riverview Hospital for their kindness and care of Lloyd in his last weeks. Lloyd warmly appreciated the good times and kindness given him by the attendants and residents of the Maple, at the Rosewood, 857 Wilkes Ave., and the family is grateful to them too. Lloyds funeral service will take place on Monday, November 10, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Ave., with Rev. Bob Galston officiating. Family and friends are invited to a reception at the Church following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, if so desired.
