Ethel was born June 23, 1908 in Whitewater, MB. She was raised in the Boissevain area, attended Normal School in Brandon and taught in several one room schools throughout Manitoba during the Dirty Thirties. Ethel met Robert while she was teaching at Armour School near Morris. Robert and Ethel were married September 27, 1941 and lived near Letellier for two years. They soon purchased a farm in the Broadview district near Morris where they lived until 1981, when they moved into Morris. Ethel was strongly committed to her community. She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES), and over many years active in the United Church Women and the Valley Agricultural Society. She was a volunteer at the Red River Valley Lodge and the Morris Hospital. She loved tending her garden and her flowers. Her artistic talents varied from decorating for teas and OES functions to craftwork. She has left a legacy of quilts, cross-stitched tablecloths, ceramics, and Christmas ornaments to her daughter and grandchildren. Ethel loved to travel and journeyed several times a year to Peterborough until her last trip at Christmas 1998. Last week we looked at photo albums of trips to Scotland, Arizona, Hawaii, Eastern and Western Canada, and almost every town in Manitoba including Churchill. Our family appreciates the support of the Home Care Service, Meals on Wheels, neighbours, friends and especially Charlie and Rita Covernton and David and Doreen Penner, for the caring and support that enabled Ethel to live and die where she wanted to be, in her own home.
