Fred loved nature and the great outdoors. He had a lifelong love of hunting and fishing, activities he enjoyed sharing with his many friends and family. He spent his happiest times with Sophie and their family at their cottage in Sandy Hook where he especially loved working in his meticulously tended garden. He also loved going to Birds Hill Park to look for deer and visit the horses. Prior to his retirement, Fred was an avid golfer and won many company tournaments. He was also an enthusiastic follower of local sports teams as well as the NHL. Fred was always busy with his hands, seemingly able to make anything. He loved playing with his gameboy, making music on the harmonica, and was an avid reader, favouring cowboy books over all others. He was an expert welder by trade and a talented cook. As the famly baker, Fred loved making a variety of bread, especially Paska at Easter. He was renowned for his milk soup, pasta and homemade wine. Fred was a member of the Friendly Settlers Seniors Club and always looked forward to making perogies at St. Michaels Ukrainian Catholic Church. Fred loved to travel. He and Sophie took trips to Hawaii, Mexico and Alaska, around the continental U.S., including the Black Hills, Nashville and Florida, and to Northern Manitoba and throughout Western Canada. Fred and Sophie would have been married for 62 years on November 15, 2003. Fred was a kind and generous man, always ready and willing to help everyone. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. They would additionally like to express gratitude to Dr. Hershfield, whom Fred considered not just his physician but also his friend. They also thank the Winnipeg Paramedics and the staff and chaplain at Concordia Hospital for their kindness. Knowing Fred, he would have gratefully declined flowers, hoping instead that you would spend the money and time enjoying your family or the great outdoors.
