GRACE WALBY It is with much sadness and sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Grace Solveig Hausmann-Walby on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at the Seven Oaks General Hospital. Grace was born on March 28, 1918 in Winnipeg to Olave and Seena Hausmann-Walby. She is predeceased by both her parents, and her brother Roy, who passed away in 1998. She is loved and deeply missed by her sister-in-law Doreen Walby; nephew Chris (Vera) nieces, Cynthia (Ron), Kristine (Allan) and great-nephews and nieces Brandon, Clayton, Ainslee, Christien, Colton, Madison and Matthew. Grace received her early education in the public school system in Winnipeg. She received her B.A. at the University of Manitoba in 1938, and received her diploma in Education at the same university in 1939. Grace started as a teacher in rural schools where she became an adjustment teacher and a psychometrist before moving on to Chicago where she received her M.A. (Masters) in 1952 and her Ph.D. in 1967. It was at this time in Chicago that she was a Diagnostician and Remedial Reading Teacher at the University of Chicago Reading Clinic. Grace was also active in the International Reading Association and served on its Bylaws, Citations, Evaluation Elections and the Canadian Organization Committee. She was a member of the Board of Directors from 1972 to 1975, and was Chairman of the history of IRA committee; as well as a member of the Professional Library Funds committee. She was also Past-President of the reading council of Greater Winnipeg. Grace was extremely happy at her place of employment where she was Head of the Clinical Reading of the Child Guidance Clinic of Greater Winnipeg until her retirement in June 1980. Grace was a member of many professional societies such as the Psychological Association of Manitoba, the Manitoba Psychological Society, International Reading Association, Manitoba Teachers Society, Pi Lambda Theta and was President of Delta Kappa Gamma from 1973 to 1975. Grace was the author of many publications such as Developing Understanding and Skills in Word Recognition in Grades IV through VI as well as being the Editor of the Canadian Edition of the MacMillan reading program Grades 1 to 3, published in Canada by Collier-MacMillan. She was also nominated by the International Reading Association for the Outstanding Dissertation Award in 1968. In her post-retirement years, Grace loved to travel, visiting friends and family often, traveling to Britain and Norway, as well as to Florida in the United States. Grace was an active member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church where she recently attended the 100th Anniversary of the Church on October 4 and 5 this year. She was involved in all aspects of the church, from teaching Sunday School to being the first woman to be elected Honorary Deacon of the Church. She loved to spend a lot of her Fridays going to the Norwegian club where she made many lasting friendships, and also got the chance to converse in Norwegian on a regular basis. Another special place for Grace was at the family cabin in Petersfield where she had many happy memories. We would like to extend special thanks to Kristina Kowalski for her devoted care to Grace, as well to Barry and Gordon for taking the time to drive Grace to all her activities. Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 155 Bannerman Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Graces memory to the Tabernacle Baptist Church or the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9. Cropo Funeral Chapel 586-8044
