MELFORD SWAIN Peacefully, on Tuesday, November 11, 2003 at the Seven Oaks Hospital, Melford Swain, aged 81 years of Belair, MB. He leaves surviving his children, Maurice (Viola) Swain, Linda (Leo) Delorme, Frank (Dorothy) Swain, Geraldine Swain, Edith (Willard) Semard, Cheryl (Robert) Carver, George (Alison) Swain and Lorraine (William) Verrier; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his daughter-in-law Bonnie; brothers and sisters, Gloria (Arch), Allen (Steffie), Ethel (Fred) and Dallas (Joanne) as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Tom and Charlotte; his wife Mabel; his son Gregory and two sons in infancy. Melford was born in Grand Marais on July 13, 1922. He was also raised there, later moving to Belair, MB. He left home at the age of 13 years old. He worked hauling ice in Winnipeg and later moved back to Grand Marais where he met and married Mabel. Melford worked for the Abitibi Pulp and Paper Mill in Pine Falls as a wood cutter and later as a strip boss. He was also a trapper, hunter and commercial fisherman. Melford and his wife Mabel worked together to make a living for themselves and their 11 children. Melford also served his country in the Second World War. He was a very private person, a man of few words and had a good sense of humour. He had more compassion for his family than he showed. Melford knew a lot of people but he had a few close friends namely, Johnny Wise and Bill Thomas. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 15 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. Viewing will be held one hour prior to service time. Interment will follow the service in the Jackfish Lake Cemetery with lunch after in the Grand Marais Community Hall. His pallbearers will be his grandsons, Robbie, Wade, Dion, Kevin, Ron, Kenny and Clint. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
