Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDORIS EDVENA HETLAND (nee PROCTOR) Oh Doris, how we loved you. On November 12, 2003, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, passed away at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg. Doris was born in Newmarket, ON and went to Poplar Bank School on Yonge Street until Grade 8. As a teenager, she walked three miles into Newmarket High School. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Hamilton General Hospital where she met some life long friends. She immediately joined TransCanada Airlines. She trained in Winnipeg, was posted in Moncton and then Toronto where she flew the "milk route". She moved to Montreal where she flew on one of the first TCA routes overseas "The TransAtlantic". It was in Montreal where she met Forrest. They were married in June 1952 and moved to Saskatoon, where their three children were born. They raised their family in the city and on the farm, east of Naicam. She and Forrest accepted the Saskatchewan Master Farm Family Award in 1970. In 1971, the family moved to Winnipeg, where she resided until her death. Doris had a real love for life. She cherished her many friends. Playing bridge, curling, Canadian Club, Canadian Maple Wings Association, Meals-on-Wheels were all interests in her life. Among her volunteer activities at Westminster United Church, she was known as the "cookie lady". She enjoyed summer life at the cottage. Predeceased by her parents, Fred and Mabel Proctor; her brother, Ted and sisters, Marion, Doreen and Pauline, she leaves her loving husband, Forrest; children, Betty-Jane (Ken) Thomas, Bill (Lori) and Barb (Bob) Lefsrud; grandchildren, Brenna Thomas, Carli, Gina, Brett, and Scott Hetland, Erik, Jana, and Kara Lefsrud; her brothers, Bill and Harrison and sister Margaret Buchanan. She was a devoted, caring wife, mother and grandma. We are so thankful for her. A private family service was held to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Westminster Foundation, 745 Westminster Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3G 1A5.
