Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD HUGH MCLANDRESS Donald Hugh McLandress, youngest son of Wallace and Mary, brother of Ian and Murray, and devoted and loving husband of Cora, died in Winnipeg at the age of 78 on November 16, 2003. Don was born on December 17, 1924 in Winnipeg. He grew up in River Heights and attended Robert H. Smith and Kelvin High School. Planning on working for the family-owned Vulcan Ironworks, he studied at the University of Manitoba and obtained a degree in mechanical engineering from McGill University. Realizing that engineering was not his calling, he enrolled in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University where he received his M.B.A. in 1950. It was at Stanford where Don met his future wife, classmate Cora Catherine Moore. They were married at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, home of Coras parents, on April 20, 1951 and moved to Calgary where he was working for the brokerage firm Osler, Hammond and Nanton. In 1957 they returned to Winnipeg where Don started work as an investment underwriter with James Richardson & Sons. He remained with Richardsons until he retired in 1985 as a Senior Vice-President with Richardson Greenshields of Canada Limited. He felt truly fortunate to have been able to work and live in a city he loved. Don had numerous interests and hobbies outside of his professional life. Many people will remember the joy he took in playing the piano. He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of St. Charles Country Club. He and Cora had a great passion for the arts in Winnipeg. Over the years they were patrons of the theatre, the ballet, the symphony, the chamber orchestra and more. After his retirement, he and Cora travelled frequently, making long visits to England, Scotland and Greece, and to Coras ancestral home in Louisiana to name a few. After each of their travels Don would read extensively on the history of the places they visited. In his retirement he also rekindled an interest in bridge, becoming an avid player. As with everything he did, he immersed himself completely in the game, reading extensively on strategy and playing whenever he could. Cherished above all other pursuits, however, was the time he spent at Lake of the Woods. From entertaining guests, to sailing, to waging a ceaseless war on dandelions and gooseberry, he revelled in everything connected with "the Lake". A kind, generous and loving man, Dons greatest joy in life was his family - his wife Cora and his three children, Charlie, Jane and Jim. His devotion to them and pride in their achievements was unbounded. Don is survived by his wife; his three children; his daughter-in-law Penny and his two grandchildren, Hannah and Finlay. He will be missed. A memorial service will be held on Thursday November 20 at 1:00 p.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg. THOMSON Funeral Chapels - 669 Broadway - 783-7211
