Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOAN ANNE NEWBOLD (nee PLATFORD BLACKABY) 1934 - 2003 Peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2003 at Deer Lodge Centre, Joan Anne Newbold, aged 69, passed away after a courageous battle with Picks disease. Left to mourn are her family, husband Phil; daughter Jennifer (Shaun) her grandchildren, Jake and Danika; daughter Mary Lou (Stephen) and brothers, Dale (Laura), Doug (Judith) and Gary (Norma) as well as many nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her mother Annie Platford; her father Frederick William Platford and her sister Irene McKechnie. She was born in St. Boniface and was raised by a loving and caring family at Sheridon, Neepawa and Norwood. She graduated from St. Boniface School of Nursing in 1955. She nursed at Nokomis, Flin Flon, and trained in the Air Force at London and was stationed at Cold Lake. She returned to civilian life and continued nursing at Vancouver, Fort McLeod, St. Boniface and Richmond. She moved down east and nursed at Chicoutimi. She headed next back west and was employed as a Health Nurse for the City of Vancouver. At age 43 she attended university and graduated with a BN and at the same time counselled on the Richmond Alcohol and Drug Abuse Team. Joan moved to Winnipeg with Jennifer in 1980 and was employed as a Supervisor with the Winnipeg Health Department until she retired in 1990. She married Phil in 1985. Many happy years were spent in Winnipeg and at their cottage at Matlock. She continued part time with her nursing at Gimli and Seven Oaks Hospitals. She worked weekends with the City of Winnipeg Health Department, she trained in Northern Nursing and for three years she flew in small aircraft to the majority of the Federal Nursing Stations throughout Northern Manitoba. Picks Disease was diagnosed in 1998 and ravished her mental abilities and sadly took her life. Her husband was able to accompany Joan for daily lengthy walks, visiting family and taking day trips to their cottage right up to the day she was hospitalized last February. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22 at 11:00 a.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. The Rev. Henry Falconer officiating. The family expresses gratitude to Dr. G.P. Wollner and staff at St. Boniface Clinic and to staff at Psychogeriatric Services at Seven Oaks Hospital and to staff at 3 South Deer Lodge Hospital. Thank you to residents of Lindenholm Place for their prayers and concern during Joans progressive illness. No flowers please. Memorial donations may be made directly to a charity of your choice.
