Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH (BESS) MARGARET MACINTOSH Bess passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 20, 2003, at the Selkirk General Hospital at the age of 100. She was born on September 12, 1903, in Gainsborough, SK. She later moved to Winnipeg with her family, graduating as an elementary school teacher and taught in schools in Green Bay, McConnell and McAuley. Moving to Selkirk in 1943 to look after her mother, her teaching career continued for 38 years as a Grade 2 teacher at Southward and Daerwood Schools. She retired in 1971 after 49 years of teaching. Bess was a member of Selkirk Chapter 35, Order of Eastern Star for 55 years, White Shrine of Jerusalem, and a Charter member of the Business and Professional Womens Club. Bess was a staunch and enthusiastic supporter of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. She became a season ticket holder in 1953 and attended her last game October 25, 2003, shortly after celebrating her 100th birthday. In 1992 Bess was honoured as a recipient of the Queens Commemorative Award for her contributions to her community and her many volunteer activities that continued until very recently when failing health would not permit her to continue. Her devotion to her Lord led Bess to a life dedicated to her church. She was an active member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Elder of Kirk Session, Ladies Aid, W.M.S., Bible Study Group and sang in the church choir until her death. She served for many years as a weekly volunteer on "Its a New Day." Bess was predeceased by her parents Alexander and Mary Macintosh; sisters, Grace Gilhuly and Mary Sutherland; and brother Don Macintosh; brothers-in-law, George Gilhuly and George Sutherland; and sister-in-law Gert Macintosh. Auntie Bess will be deeply missed by her nephews, Brian Gilhuly of Selkirk, George (Natalie) Macintosh of Red Deer, AB, and Douglas (Albina) Macintosh of Arnes; great-nieces and nephews, Shelly Nickel (Jack), Dawn Nosaty (Larry), Brett Macintosh (Cathy), Bart Macintosh, Shauna Macintosh; great-great-nieces and nephews, April, Scott, Ben, Nick, Josh, Andrea, Brandi and Shelby. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Natalie Antonenko and staff of Selkirk and District General Hospital Medical Ward for their kindness during Bess brief hospital stay. A celebration of life will be conducted by the Rev. Matthew Brough on Monday, November 24 at 1:30 p.m. in Knox Presbyterian Church, Eveline and McLean, Selkirk. Cremation will follow the service, and the interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Knox Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 341 Eveline St., Selkirk, MB R1A 1N1, in memory of Bess. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
