Date of Passing: Nov 19, 2003
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMABEL PATRICIA (PAT) FORTNEY 1928 - 2003 Our beloved mother, Mabel Patricia Fortney (nee Simpson), went to be with her Lord on November 19, 2003 at the age of 75 years. Pat was born on St. Patricks Day, 1928, in Ottawa, ON. She spent her early years in the town of Arnprior, ON, with her loving grandparents, Mary and Robert Simpson and their big brood of nine children. Pat later went to live with her mother Mabel. It was during childhood that she met Iva Chomyn, forming a childhood friendship that would turn into a lifelong bond of support and caring. In 1952, she met and married Ed Fortney after a whirlwind six-week courtship, eventually settling in Winnipeg, where they would raise their five children before moving to Calgary in 1978. Mom was a dedicated worker who held a variety of jobs - her favourite being working for the City of Calgary in its collections department. But her greatest pride and joy came from being a mother, a role in which she had no peer. Pat was a warm-hearted, generous, doting mom who put her kids first and never lost her sense of humour, even during lifes difficult challenges. She overcame the loss of two of her children in tragic accidents, and despite struggling with her health for the past decade, she remained positive, interested in the world, and devoted to ensuring her family was united and happy. Mom, you were the best mother in the whole world. Although we are heavy-hearted over losing you, we know you are in Gods arms now and are no longer in any pain. Pats passing is greatly mourned by her surviving children, Douglas (Heather), Denise (Dave McInnis), and Valerie (Robert Majamaa) and grandchildren, Kristen and Mark. Along with her immediate family, Pat will be greatly missed by her surviving relatives, including sisters-in-law, Jennette (Ron Ralston), Vera and Eleanor; brother-in-law Donald; cousin Pamela Bowman (Mark and Rachel) nephews, Brian and Glen; nieces, Jackie, Joanne, Janice, and Donna; and numerous extended family members across Canada and the United States. Pat was predeceased by Edward, her husband of 51 years who passed away on August 7, 2003. She was also predeceased by two of her children, Shelley and Robert; granddaughter Laura; mother Mabel Simpson; mother-in-law Marie Fortney; father-in-law Joseph Fortney; brothers-in-law, Joseph and Allan; and sister-in-law Doris Fortney. Funeral services will be held at McInnis & Holloways, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street N., Calgary, AB), on Monday, November 24 at 10:30 a.m. with the Very Rev. Joseph E. Le Fort officiating.
