MAY KANTOR 1927 to 2003 Our beloved May Kantor passed away at age 76 at the St. Boniface Hospital on Tuesday, November 11, 2003. She was predeceased by her parents, Lil and Jack Garfinkel. Left to mourn her loss are her husband of 55 years, Sam Kantor; her younger sister Bernice Elfenbaum (Joe) her children, Anita, David (and Anat), Charles, Michael (and Hagar) and Mark (and Jill) her grandchildren, Navot, Amit, Tair and Daniel; and numerous relatives and friends. May was born on March 22, 1927 and lived in Winnipeg her entire life. She attended Machray School and St. Johns High School, and attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 1948. After marrying later that year, she became a full-time homemaker, centering her life on her family. May had a joy for life and wanted everyone else to share that joy. She had a strong belief in God and her faith, and loved having the family over for the Friday night Sabbath meal. She was fascinated with people and with how they led their lives. She could talk to anyone, never being afraid to speak her mind. She did not hide her feelings. As a forgiving and compassionate person, it was very hard for her to see people sad or hurt or sick. She wanted to do everything she could to make things better. May felt things deeply. She was a strong, passionate woman with a big heart. She loved to share her passions with other people. She used to say she loved beautiful things. May was an artist with a natural talent for drawing. There were always fresh flowers in her house. She called flowers the jewels of the earth. Everyone enjoyed the roses she planted outside her house. She loved bird watching, and would leave crumbs near her back door to attract the birds. May was a creative, spontaneous person with a child-like love of life and fun. She was a great gift giver. Children delighted her, especially her grandchildren who felt her unconditional love. They will remember her for all the time she devoted to them; for the songs she sang to them at bedtime; for the ghost stories she made up for them on demand; and for the weekend expeditions to shop and have lunch with savtah. May was very much loved by her family. Her spirit lives on in all those whose lives she touched. She would not want us to dwell too long on our sadness at losing her. May would want us to celebrate her life and our own lives by living passionately -- by savoring every joyful, beautiful, loving moment, while seeking to accept and understand the sadness, anger, and confusion that are equally part of being alive. Funeral services were held at the Chesed Shel Emes Chapel on Thursday, November 13 at 1:00 p.m. Burial followed at the Rosh Pina Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Joe Elfenbaum, Bill Silverberg, Marvin Garfinkel, Chuck Golfman, Murray Elfenbaum, and Marshall Stitz. The family would like to thank Dr. Wong and staff of the St. Boniface Hospital for the excellent care they provided. If desired, donations in Mays memory may be made to the Cancercare Manitoba Foundation, the Herzlia-Adas Yeshurun Synagogue; or the Ben-Gurion University.
