JOHN KOZOWAY Peacefully, on November 24, 2003, surrounded by his loving family, John passed away at the age of 85 years. John will be sadly missed by his wife of 52 years, Mary; his children, Dennis (Sandra) and Tammie (Larry) Burbella and grandchildren, Bradley, Michael, Laura and Curtis. Born in the Ukraine on June 22, 1918, John was predeceased by his parents and his four brothers and one sister. In his early years John served in the Second World War. Soon after the war started, he became a prisoner of war. Following the war John immigrated to Canada and while working in Saskatchewan met Mary Radawetz. They were married on August 7, 1951 in Hazel Dell, SK and they then settled in the Lockport area. John worked doing different labour jobs until his employment at Supercrete Ltd. where he worked for many years until his retirement in 1981. He was a long-standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Selkirk. He was also active at his parish church where he was a devoted choir member. John also enjoyed dancing, gardening, family and friends, and of course, singing, which always filled the house on Sunday mornings. But his love for his family was his greatest devotion. Gigi often spent time telling us about the old days in the Ukraine and making sure we never forget our heritage. His grandchildren were very special to him and he would talk of them and their accomplishments often. Prayers will be said on Wednesday, November 26 (tonight) at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Rossdale, MB with Fr. Richard Soo officiating. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery. His pallbearers will be Steve Hryb, John Hryb, Alex Kowalski, Robert Radawetz, Gord MacCollum and Robert Falowka. Thank you to Dr. Hussain and staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for the wonderful care during his stay. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Rossdale, MB, 530 Donald St., Lockport, MB R1A 3K4. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
