DOUG MINNIS Mr. Doug Minnis passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre Unit T7 in Winnipeg on Tuesday, November 25, 2003, in his 81st year. Doug was born at Bede, MB on October 2, 1923 and spent the early part of his life there, finishing his high school in Melita. In 1943, at the age of 20, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was sent overseas in 1944 and returned home in 1945 with the rank of Flying Officer. Doug married Norma Kathleen Gerrand of Virden in 1948 and moved to Melita in 1949. He was Service Manager for Cobb Motors from 1949 until it was sold in 1979 and finished his working career with Circle M Furniture in 1981. Doug was very active in the community serving as Town Counselor for two - three year terms, Member of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Board for three years; seven years with Melita Air Cadets (part of the time as Commanding Officer) four years on the Antler River School Board; Finance Committee for the Melita Centennial; devoted Legion Member since 1946 and President of the Legion for three separate terms. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Jane and William and his sisters, Marrie, Florence, Lillian and Dorothy. He is survived by his wife Norma; son Bryan (Cathy) of Beausejour; daughters, Kathy (Drummond) Brown of Winnipeg and Debra (Garry) Proven of Courtland, ON; grandchildren, Bradley, Kimberly, Tyler, Cailey and Kerry. The family would like to thank the many people for their kindness in Dougs later years who drove him to and from the Legion and for the excellent care he received from all of the staff at the Deer Lodge Centre Unit T7. The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Victoria United Church Melita, MB. Rev. Richard Cooke officiating, with interment to follow at Melita Cemetery. Donations may be given to CancerCare Manitoba, 173 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7, Alzheimers Society, Unit 10 Mezzanine, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2 or to the charity of your choice.
