GRACE SPICE WALLACE (1911 - 2003) In her 93rd year, Grace Spice Wallace died peacefully at home in Memphis, Tennessee on November 15, 2003. She was born in Winnipeg on January 11, 1911 and married Tellis (Ted) Wallace in 1949. Mr. Wallace died in 1973. Mrs. Wallace was also predeceased by her parents, Edward and Mary Jean Bayne Spice; her sister Roberta MacDonald and her brothers, Campbell, Ted, Donald and William Spice. She is survived by her sister Frances Spice of Winnipeg and sisters-in-law, Merle Spice of Oscoda, Michigan and Mary Stuart of Chantilly, Virginia; nieces, Margaret (Spice) Moyle of Oscoda, Michigan, Joan Spice (Joyce), Judy Spice and Patricia Spice (Owen) of Ottawa; nephews, Gordon Spice of Lexington, Virginia, Milton Wallace of Sonoma, California and Wallace Stuart of Chantilly, Virginia; 11 great-nieces and nephews and three great-great nieces. Mrs. Wallace graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1931 and held diplomas from United College (Manitoba) and Brooklyn Hospital School of Nursing in New York. She worked at the St. Boniface and Winnipeg General Hospitals. In 1949, she joined the University of Tennessee at Memphis as Assistant Director of Nursing Education at Gailor Psychiatric Hospital. She retired in 1976 as Assistant to the Dean and Associate Professor and Coordinator of Basic Sciences in the UT School of Nursing. A long proponent of university-based nursing education, Mrs. Wallace trained countless students in the essential sciences of biology, physiology and anatomy. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace enjoyed fishing in Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, the Gulf of Mexico and in the cool waters of Cache Lake at the Spice family cottage at Farlane, ON. Mrs. Wallace was active life until shortly before her death. She was a volunteer at the Lichterman Nature Centre and the Each One, Teach One literacy program. Her loves were nature, literacy, life-long learning, laughter, her friends and her large extended family of siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Messages may be sent to the family at gracewallacefamily@rogers.com.
