Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS GEORGE BAXTER It is with deep sorrow that his family announces the passing of Douglas George Baxter on Friday, November 28, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer. Doug was residing in Thunder Bay. He was born in Winnipeg and attended Luxton Jr. High and St. Johns High Schools. Doug loved sports playing soccer, hockey, baseball, basketball, football and in his later years, curling and golf. He enjoyed fishing with his children and grandchildren, telling stories of their many escapades. On November 21, 1942 he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy (Joyce) Stavely, then joined the Royal Canadian Navy on November 29, 1942, where he proudly served his country on the H.M.C.S. Coppercliffe. Doug was employed by the CNR for 36 years, working in Transcona, Jasper, Rainy River, Atikokan and Thunder Bay. He retired in 1977 and moved to Matlock, MB where he and his wife lived for 23 years. He was a Charter Member of the Teulon Golf and Country Club and also a former member of the Fort William Golf and Country Club. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 42, the CNR Pensioners Association and the Masonic Lodge, Ionic Branch No. 641, Rainy River. Doug will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his wife Peggy; his daughter Bonnie McKiel; his son Scotty (Wendy) and his grandchildren, Cory, Katy, Michael and Carson. He had numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who will remember him fondly. Doug had a great sense of humour and was still joking right up to his final day. He was predeceased by his mother and father, May and David Baxter. His family extends sincere thanks to all who cared for him during his illness. Special thanks go to his homecare workers and St. Josephs Hospice. You are all truly angels of mercy. Many thanks also to Rev. Canon Paul Carr, for his compassion and visits during Dougs illness, and to Drs. Hartford and Simpson for their loving care. According to Dougs wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church in Whytewold, MB, Wednesday, December 3 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Kenneth Pawluk officiating. Interment of ashes will be in the family plot in St. Johns Cathedral Cemetery, Winnipeg, following the service. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Dougs memory to a charity of your choice.
