DORA HERSHBERG It is with deep sadness that the family of Dora Hershberg announces her death on Wednesday, November 26, 2003, two months and three days after the death of her beloved husband of 71 years, Percy. Still bright, engaged, funny and feisty at 93, she died peacefully at Victoria General Hospital. She is survived by her adored only child Arlene and son-in-law Sam Klapman. She was a devoted grandma to Jordan and Betsy Klapman, Seth Klapman and Lisa Bennett; and a doting great-grandma to Sarah and Daniel Klapman, Amaya Black, and Adam and Emily Bennett. Despite the distance that separated them, she was in constant touch with her family and passionately proud of them. In Winnipeg, she had an extraordinarily close relationship with her nieces, Debby Davis and Susan Tessler; and with her great-niece Jennifer McKiel. The greatest joy of the last nine months of her life was her great-great-niece Rachel McKiel. She will also be especially missed by her sisters, Mollie Wash and Esther Breslaw; and her niece Shelley Robertson. The families of Shelley, Debby and Susan will also miss her. Dora was born in 1910 in Winnipeg, the second of Zlata and Alexander Lepkins five children. She grew up in the family home on Selkirk Avenue, and lived there as well as a bride and young mother. She and Percy began courting when she was 18 and married when she was 22. Their 75 year romance was an inspiration. She was an accomplished seamstress and knitter and an extraordinary cook and baker. A cracker-jack mah jongg and bridge player, she was a great fan of sports on television. She was a news junkie, keeping up-to-date by listening to radio talk shows and, despite failing eyesight, reading newspapers. And particularly in late life, she pulled no punches and didnt suffer fools gladly. She maintained lifelong friendships and widened that circle willingly. She was predeceased by her brothers, Ben Lepkin and Pip Lepkin. Sisters-in-law, Marion Lepkin, Rita Lepkin, Toots Ludwig and Lola Roadberg; and her brother-in-law Ed Hershberg; as well other in-laws, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, also survive her. A graveside service was held on Friday, November 28, at Rosh Pina Memorial Park, with Rabbi Neal Rose officiating. The family is grateful for the loving care Dora received from the staff at the Simkin Centre of the Sharon Home, particularly from nurse Carol. Donations to the Simkin Centre in Doras memory would be appreciated.
