KATHARINA (TINA) WIEBE April 5, 1919 - December 5, 2003 Early Friday morning, December 5, 2003 at the Concordia Hospital, Tina passed away peacefully. Tina was admitted to hospital on November 8. Her health had been failing since the spring and summer. Tina lost her battle with the cancer but remained in good spirits and maintained her dignity to the end. Tina was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Katharina Wiebe (nee Sawatzky) two brothers, Peter and Johan Wiebe; brothers-in-law, Karl Krol and Henry Klassen; sister-in-law Evelyn Wiebe. Left to mourn her death are her sister Nettie Krol Winnipeg, sister Mary Klassen of Coaldale, AB and brother Henry Wiebe of Saskatoon, SK. Also six nieces, two nephews, one dear uncle and aunt, as well as many relatives and dear friends. Tina was born on April 5, 1919 in Alexandrowka, Ukraine. Even her youth was not carefree as her mother died at an early age and her father was taken as a political prisoner during the Communist regime. Tina was baptized upon the confession of her faith on June 13, 1943 in Gruenfeld, Ukraine during the German occupation, when freedom of religion was allowed for that short period of time. Tina experienced the turmoil of the Second World War, the trek from Russia to Poland and Germany as head of her family. Several post war years were spent in Oeding, West Germany, where Tina found some wonderful local people that showed her and her youngest brother Henry much kindness and granted them friendly hospitality. Tina kept in contact with these people and has been back to Germany for a visit with them as well as visiting some cousins who have been able to come from the Ukraine in later years and settle in West Germany. In 1948 Tina was able to immigrate to Canada and lived in Watrous, SK for about five years. She spent some time in Alberta and British Columbia prior to settling in Winnipeg in 1963. Upon her arrival in Winnipeg, Tina rented a suite of rooms at the home of her cousin in the west end of Winnipeg and started to attend the Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church. Here she has been a faithful active member to the end. Tina was a member of the Frauenverein and had many dear friends there. Tina was employed by Paulin Chambers since the early 1960s and has been retired for 19 years, but still has contact with many friends from her work situation. Tina will be missed by the residence of her apartment building, where she has been a friend to many and assisted many in need of a helping hand or just a listening ear. Tina enjoyed hand work and has crocheted many tablecloths, afghans and completed many beautiful needle point pictures. Tina was very close to her nieces and nephews and was always concerned for their welfare. She will be greatly missed by her family, relatives and her dear friends. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, 926 Garfield, with pastor Victor Kliewer officiating. Viewing on Monday, December 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Hwy. Interment in Mennonite Memorial Gardens.
