NIELS FREDERICK (FRED) NIELSON It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Fred Nielson at age 86 on December 6, 2003. He will be deeply missed by his four loving children: Karen Thorlakson, Paul (Brenda) Nielson, Sylvia Nielson, and Norma (Wayne) Lucas, and his special friend Elsie Pierson; as well as his grandchildren, Kirsten (Derek), Cheryl (Scott), Jeremy, Eric, Mia, Ian, and Adrienne and great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Justin. He was predeceased by Gussie, his beloved wife of 52 years, and his brother Paul (Margaret). Fred was born in Winnipeg and grew up on a farm near Lundar. After his fathers death, he moved back to Winnipeg at age 18 and went to work in his Uncle Carls machine shop. He was hardworking and built a very successful business, Nielson Machine Limited. Being a sociable and active person, Fred enjoyed curling, cycling, golfing, playing shuffleboard and cribbage, and travelling. He was actively involved with the Masons and Shriners and became a life member of the Khartum Temple Provost Corps. As a devoted father and grandfather, he loved the numerous family dinners and the many happy times spent at the cottages at Whytewold, and later Falcon Lake. He touched the lives of many and was admired for his strength of character, dependability, and his zest for life. Fred was very appreciative of the excellent care he received from Dr. James Johnston, Giselle and Erin at CancerCare. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to CancerCare Manitoba, P.O. Box 2248, Winnipeg, R3C 4A6. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 11 at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. at Dieppe Road. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
