ARTHUR GORDON ALLAN October 5, 1922 - December 9, 2003 Surrounded by the love of his family, Art passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital. He will be lovingly remembered by his son Craig (wife Christine), grandsons Colin (Isabel and great-granddaughter, Paige), Curtis and Corey; and daughter Lori (husband Derek), grandson Jeff, granddaughters Erin (Adam), Jamie and Jasmine. Art is also survived by his sister Hazel and brother Ernie, sister-in-law Doris, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of over 54 years, Helen in 1999; parents, parents-in-law, brother Les and sister Joyce, brother-in-law John, sisters-in-law Olga, Sue, Margaret and Kay and spouses. Art and Helen were married on June 2, 1945 and resided for most of their lives in St. James. Art was truly a self-made man. As his father died when he was 15, he started working at CN as a messenger boy delivering telegrams to assist financially with his family. After taking various management courses and working his way up the ladder, Art retired at age 62 from CN/CP Telecommunications as an Area Manager. While employed, Art donated his time to a variety of clubs; he taught the Junior Rifle Safety course for many years and was an active member and volunteer of the LaVerendrye Game and Fish Association. After retirement, Art pursued his interest of nature and the environment. While we thought we would humour him with his conversations of "recycling, ozone layer, greenhouse gases, etc." we later had to eat crow and admit that he was truly ahead of his time in his concerns. Art was actively involved in Manitoba Wildlife Federation, Oak Hammock Marsh (where he always took his grandchildren), Ducks Unlimited, and was instrumental in forming Manitoba Habitat Trust - his concern of natural land for his grandchildrens children was his impetus. Dad was a gentle, kind and giving person who taught us patience, forgiveness and to do any job the best you could. He was also a promoter of "learning until the day you die". Dad was a wonderful father, husband and grandfather and will be missed by all. The family would like to thank the Golden West Centennial Lodge staff for the wonderful care Dad received over the past year. Also, the family appreciates the care and compassion Dad received from the Third Floor North of the Grace Hospital staff over the last week and a half. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 11 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Arts name to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
