LYDIA JOYCE "LYL" PETERS Lydia Joyce "Lyl" Peters, born December 3 1906, died peacefully five days short of her 97th birthday, on November 29, 2003. Lyl was the second of eight children born to Alexander and Katherine Peters. The family home in Winnipeg, was a busy, happy household, a place where friends and family congregated around the card table or the piano. A good education was valued, and with more than just a high school diploma, Lyl graduated from Normal School and began her long and successful career as a kindergarten teacher. Lyl began her professional life in rural Manitoba, often in one room school houses. She taught kindergarten for 45 and one half years, in Manitoba towns such as Herriot, Melrose, Arizona, and finally in Winnipeg (Robert H. Smith School and Wolseley School). When she retired in 1972, former pupils meeting her on the street would remember their kind and patient "Miss Peters". Like many kindergarten teachers, Lyls hobbies involved crafts, and sewing. Her bowling league was very important to her, and with her team she won many trophies. After her parents died, Lyl left Manitoba and moved to Victoria, BC to join her sister Elsie and her brother Ed and his wife June. Lyl made many good friends during her long life, most of whom have predeceased her. During her last years she lived among new friends at Mount Edwards Court in Victoria. Lyl is predeceased by her sisters, Mildred, Elsie, and Marjory; and her brothers, Fred and Ed. She is survived by her sister Alfreda of Toronto and her brother Lloyd and his wife Alma of Winnipeg. Lyl was the beloved aunt of Fred, David, Diane, Bob, Jim, and Peter, and will be greatly missed by her niece and nephews and their families. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 12, at Mount Edwards Court, Victoria..
